Square One Development Group builds one-of-a-kind custom homes across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia — the kind of architect-led work recognized for craft, precision, and restraint.
Bespoke residences, built without compromise.
A custom home is only as good as the builder who realizes it. We specialize in singular residences and the details others avoid — hillside and remnant sites, deep basements, structural glass walls, board-formed concrete, intricate pools, and dramatic cantilevers. Our work meets the execution tolerances modern design demands: flush reveals, seamless millwork and matched wood veneers, and fully integrated lighting and AV.
We build for clients who already have an architect and a vision, and for those just beginning to plan. Either way, our role is the same: protect the design, solve the field conditions, and make it real — quietly, carefully, and for clients who value discretion.
The homes we’ve built have been recognized among the best architect-led residences in the country. Blue Ridge House, designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig, is a steel-framed home over the Virginia valley with a board-formed concrete core and a moving glass wall — published in Dwell. Jigsaw, designed by David Jameson, FAIA, is the recipient of a national AIA Institute Honor Award. Wildcat Mountain and Liminal House are both recipients of International Architecture Awards. Ontario Residence, a four-story home on a fourteen-foot urban lot, is the recipient of a Residential Design Architecture Award.
Every design award belongs to the architect. Our credential is having built the recognized work.
The most valuable work happens before a wall goes up. Engaging early, we partner with you and your architect on estimating, value engineering, constructability, and phasing — so an ambitious design survives contact with reality and the budget. From there, an open, communicative process keeps you informed at every stage, so the home you imagined is the home that gets built. And when the keys change hands, the relationship continues through Square One Care, our ongoing program for the homes we’ve built.
