Pivoting

MODE4 Architecture (Christopher Tucker, AIA) · Built by Square One
The Project

A modern Bethesda home, reimagined — and given a new signature.

Pivoting is a renovation and addition to a contemporary Bethesda residence originally designed by Robert M. Gurney, FAIA. As general contractor, Square One built a new carport, garage, and art studio/gallery, the home's namesake oversized pivot doors, and a serene Japanese moss garden — all designed by MODE4 Architecture's Christopher Tucker, AIA.

A disciplined palette of warm wood, blackened steel, and floor-to-ceiling glass ties the new work to the original architecture while creating moments of quiet drama. The blackened-steel kitchen and the pivoting entry doors anchor the home's modern character; the moss garden softens it.

The result became one of the most decorated single-home runs in the region — recipient of AIA Northern Virginia, AIA Potomac Valley, and AIA|DC / Washingtonian honors, a Home & Design Grand Award, and a feature in Architecture DC.
