Renovations That Honor the Architecture

From a single refined space to a full gut renovation or addition, Square One reimagines homes with the same rigor we bring to new construction — across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

The work

Some of our most-awarded work began as a renovation.

Renovating a significant home is harder than building new. You inherit conditions no drawing fully predicts, and you work within walls and structure that have to be respected, reinforced, or quietly re-engineered. Done well, the result reads as if it were always meant to be — which is the highest compliment a renovation can earn.

We take on whole-house gut renovations, additions, and the kind of interior transformations where every plane, reveal, and material has to align. The same execution standard that defines our new construction applies here: seamless millwork, matched veneers, integrated lighting and AV, and finishes that hold up to close inspection.

Proof in built work

Jigsaw, designed by David Jameson, FAIA, recycled a single-story suburban house into a contemporary courtyard home — and is the recipient of a national AIA Institute Honor Award, one of American architecture’s highest distinctions. Logan Circle, designed by Todd Webb of Dirk Denison Architects, was a two-level condominium taken to the slab and rebuilt around a floating stair and skylit core, then published in Interior Design. Hull House is the recipient of a Residential Design Architecture Award. Each proves the same point: the right builder can elevate an existing home into something extraordinary.

Every design award belongs to the architect. Our credential is having built the recognized work.

How we work

Renovations reward early involvement even more than new builds. Engaging in preconstruction, we surface the hidden conditions, sequence the work to keep the home livable where possible, and protect both the design intent and the budget. When the work is complete, Square One Care keeps the finished home performing for years after.
